MALAWI'S DIGITAL HIGHWAY
Open Connect partners ICTAM
08.10.2020 | INDUSTRY UPDATES
In a bid to improve digital literacy in the country, a tech company Open Connect Limited (OCL) has partnered ICT Association of Malawi (Ictam).
The partnership will see Ictam disseminating ICT information to its members and the public.
Speaking during the signing ceremony of the agreement, OCL Chief Executive Officer, Sandile Dhlomo, said the Covid-19 pandemic has shown that people have to embrace technology if life activities are to continue.
“It is important to partner a reputable body which will be working hand in hand to take the information out so we believe that Ictam will tell our story from an informed perspective for the benefit of Malawians,” Dlomo said.
Ictam president, Bram Fudzulani, said the partnership also satisfies their quest to provide ICT information to the masses.
“It is providing us with a platform where critical IT matters can be discussed and influence at a policy level and to bring in civic education because digital literacy is another issue government is struggling with,” Fudzulani said.
Meanwhile, Fudzulani has blamed the treasury for what he called ignoring important aspects of ICT development in the 2020/21 National Budget.
“Recently we made our submissions through our member to the committee working on reforms through the vice president so we still hope to be pursuing that agenda because these things were in their manifesto,” Fudzulani said.
ICT services have ranked poorly in Malawi in the recent past for example, in a recent report by DW Akademie, Malawi ranks 97th out of 100 countries in a global Inclusive Internet Index for the least affordable internet ranking.
Internet penetration in 2017 was at 13.78 percent of the population while internet affordability in Malawi stood at 15.80 percent last year.
